Letter from HM Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mrs Claire Hensma

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2022
Her Majesty The Queen will celebrate her Platinum Jubilee this year and events are being organised to celebrate this event. Throughout the year, Her Majesty and members of the Royal Family will travel around the country to undertake a variety of engagements to mark this historic occasion. This will culminate in a special four-day Bank Holiday Weekend, from Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June 2022 which will provide an opportunity for communities and people throughout the United Kingdom to come together to celebrate the historic milestone. There will be a series of very special events over the weekend and a full programme can be found here: Plans for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Central Weekend 2022 There are many ways that you, schools, libraries, communities and individuals can take part in The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. I would be grateful for your help in encouraging your local community to get involved with the following:

The Platinum Pudding competition
To mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, a nationwide baking competition sets out to find a brand new pudding dedicated to The Queen. The Big Jubilee Lunch and Fortnum & Mason are inviting applications from UK residents aged 8 and over to create the perfect Platinum Pudding recipe.
Five finalists will prepare their pudding for an expert judging panel including Dame Mary Berry, Monica Galetti and Buckingham Palace Head Chef Mark Flanagan. The winning recipe will be made available to the public and the pudding will be enjoyed at Big Jubilee Lunches during the Jubilee weekend, and by generations to come. I’m hoping that many Cumbrians raise to the challenge to get a slice of the action. The competition closes on Friday 4 February 2022. You can find out further details online: The Platinum Pudding Competition.

Street Parties and The Big Jubilee Lunch
The UK has a long history of organised street parties to celebrate national events. You’re welcome to host parties right across the bank holiday weekend, or as part of The Big Jubilee Lunch.
The Big Jubilee Lunch encourages communities to come together, celebrate their connections and get to know each other a little bit better and will bring the Jubilee celebrations into the heart of every community. Find out more at: The Big Jubilee Lunch. Read guidance on how to host a street party online. If you’re planning to host a street party, you can share the details for people to find out more on an interactive map: how you can get involved – The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2022
Why not share your celebration with Cumbria Lieutenancy by sending us photographs of your day for us to use on our social media channels and on our website. Send your photographs to Lieutenancy@cumbria.gov.uk.

Beacon Lighting – 2 June 2022
The UK has a long tradition of celebrating Royal Jubilees, Weddings and Coronations through beacon lighting. You could help to organise or just get involved in beacon lighting within your community on the evening of 2 June.
It is hoped that 70 Beacons can be lit in Cumbria, marking each year of the Queen’s reign, and I am sure with your help this can be achieved. I feel sure that many of us will wish to participate as we did for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Guidance can be found on the website: www.queensjubileebeacons.com or from Bruno Peek, LVO OBE OPR, Pageant master, e-mail: brunopeek@mac.com
Early guidance from Bruno Peek asked for registration by 30 April 2022. To ensure successful registration may I suggest you try to stick to this date despite what it now says on Bruno Peek’s website! Details for registration can be found on page 15 of the Guide which you can find online:

Guide to taking part
I am grateful to Norman Thompson, one of my Deputy Lieutenants, who masterminded the Diamond Jubilee beacons, for again co-ordinating the Cumbria response. Please would those who wish to take part let him have the details of their beacon, so that a full record can be kept; he would be happy to answer any queries or provide more information.
Contact details: Norman J Thompson, DL at janor.thompson@talktalk.net or tel: 01229773836
The Queen’s Green Canopy I am most thankful to those communities who have already got involved with The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) which is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark the Platinum Jubilee inviting people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.
Everyone from individuals to community groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporates are encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees during the official planting season between October 2021 to March 2022. Tree planting will commence again in October 2022, through to the end of the Jubilee year.
A number of trees have already been planted across Cumbria, but we’d like to see even more. You can add your Jubilee tree to The Queen’s Green Canopy map – see further details at: The Queen’s Green Canopy. If you plan to get involved by planting a tree, please consider contacting us via email: Lieutenancy@cumbria.gov.uk and if a Deputy Lieutenant is available we can arrange for them to come along to celebrate and witness your tree planting ceremony. Funding and Platinum Jubilee related names and titles
More than £22 million of National Lottery funding is being made available to help communities across the country celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. Please visit the Platinum Jubilee website to find out what funding is available: What funding is available? – The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2022 If you are considering naming community events, projects and buildings to mark the Platinum Jubilee, there is Government guidance available here: Platinum Jubilee Royal Names Guidance
Social media Throughout the year we will be promoting all aspects of The Queens Platinum Jubilee through social media in an effort to encourage as many people as possible to get involved. Please follow Cumbria Lieutenancy on Facebook and Twitter and where possible please share/retweet our messages to help keep residents in your local area informed.
